BMW (12 Models) and Mercedes (3 Models) Recall 409,004 Vehicles in Two Separate Recalls

| May 2, 2014 | Automobile Defects

Mercedes-Benz and BMW will recall 409,004 vehicles that affect 15 different models in two separate recalls in the United States.

The Mercedes-Benz recall is the larger of the two German automobile recalls.  Mercedes will recall 252,867 C300, C350, and C63 vehicles due to rear light defect.  The vehicles affected are from the model years 2008-2011 and were manufactured from January 26, 2007 through July 13, 2011.  The defect stems in the electrical connector of the rear lights is more susceptible to corrosion.  The corrosion can cause the tail, brake or rear turn signal lights to dim or fail.

Currently, the replacement parts are not available. Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will replace the bulb holders if not previously updated and replace any corroded connectors, free of charge.  Owners will be sent an interim notification in June 2014.  A second letter will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be in August or September 2014. Owners may contact Mercedes at 800-367-6372.

The second recall affects 156,137 BMW vehicles.  Twelve different models are affected including:

  • BMW 128I 2010-2011
  • BMW 135I 2011-2012
  • BMW 328I 2010-2011
  • BMW 335I 2011-2012
  • BMW 528I 2011
  • BMW 535I 2011
  • BMW 535I GRAN TURISMO 2010-2012
  • BMW 640I 2012
  • BMW X3 SAV 2010-2011
  • BMW X5 SAV 2010-2012
  • BMW X6 SAV 2011-2012
  • BMW Z4 2010-2011

The defect is that in the affected vehicles the engines can lose power or stall. In the affected vehicles, the bolts that secure the housing for the variable cam shaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen over time and may possibly break.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the four VANOS housing bolts for both VANOS units (intake and exhaust), free of charge.  The recall is expected to begin in May 2014.  In addition, owners of approximately 170,172 model year 2010-2012 BMW vehicles equipped with inline 6 cylinder engines not covered by this recall, will receive an extended warranty to address this condition.  Owners may contact BMW at 800-525-7417.
