Actos (Pioglitazone hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that is used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2. It is also known as Actoples Met, Actoplus Met XR and Duetact. These products are manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company.
Actos use for over one year has been linked to a significant increase in risk for bladder cancer. In June 2011, the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products withdrew the drug in Actos from the market citing its link to bladder cancer. That same month, Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices advised doctors not to prescribe the drug before additional investigation into the link with bladder cancer.
The FDA has ordered a label change for Actos to include a warning of the increased risk of bladder cancer.
