YAZ, YASMIN, OCELLA AND GALLBLADDER INJURIES
The birth control litigation attorneys at the Brandi Law firm are pursuing cases of gallbladder disease in women who took the birth control pills Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella.
Some women who have taken the birth control pills Yaz Yasmin, and Ocella have experienced abdominal problems, severe pain attacks, and other episodes involving their gallbladder. Often, these women, who have no other risk factors, must have their gallbladders removed-an operation called a cholecystectomy-in order to treat the injuries that the hormones in Yaz, Yasmin, or Ocella have caused. Removal of the gallbladder often results in a lifetime of complications including dietary restrictions and difficulty digesting fats in foods.
The gallbladder, an organ located under the liver on the right side of the abdomen, stores fluid known as bile which is important for the digestion of fat. Under normal circumstances, bile is produced by the liver, travels to the gallbladder, where it is stored in the gallbladder until it is released into the small intestine as needed.
However, the hormones in the birth control pills Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella can increase cholesterol levels in bile. This causes bile to harden, and build up into deposits-called gallstones. Gallstones can collect in the gallbladder, in the bile duct (the passageway to the small intestine), or travel to other parts of the body. Excess bile in the gallbladder can also cause the gallbladder and pancreas to become inflamed. Inflammation can cause pain and increase the risk of a tear in the gallbladder and more severe effects in the pancreas. When bile is prevented from flowing through the gallbladder, gallbladder disease results.
Gallbladder disease symptoms include:
- Pain in the upper right portion and/or center of the abdomen
- Pain from the abdomen to the right shoulder and back
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of Appetite
- Fever / Chills
If left untreated, gallbladder disease can cause infection which can be dangerous and life threatening especially if it spreads to other parts of the body. Gallbladder disease is diagnosed through a noninvasive medical imaging procedure called a CT scan, through an abdominal x-ray or ultrasound, or through blood tests.
