California Yaz Lawyers – Investigating Cases Nationwide
Yasmin is an oral contraceptive and is a synthetic spironolactone analogue known in the medical world as drospirenone. Because of the nature of how this birth control pill functions in the body many women have been reporting mild to severe YAZ side effects from taking Yasmin. Ocella is the generic version and is also a drospirenone. Ocella side effects are the same as Yasmin. If you have suffered any YAZ side effects or YAZ injury contact our YAZ attorneys today for a free case review.
YAZ, which was approved by the FDA in 2006, and Yasmin, which was approved in 2001, are oral contraceptives that combine estrogen and a fourth generation progestin to prevent pregnancy. They are also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and certain types of moderate acne in women. While the two birth control pills are not exactly the same, they are very similar. They both contain the novel progestin component, drospirenone, which is a diuretic that has the potential to significantly increase a risk of increased potassium levels which can lead to both gallbladder damage and blood clots.
Yaz side effects:
- blood clots in the legs (DVT)
- blood clots in the lungs (Pulmonary embolism)
- heart attack
- gall bladder disease
Yaz Blood Clots
Yaz blood clot problems including DVT and PE is a serious Yaz side effect reported by women using this fourth-generation birth control pill. Many women with no family history of blood clots have suffered from life threatening injuries involving clots. The type of hormones in birth control pills can increase the risk of developing blood clots which can lead to serious problems especially if they are not diagnosed early. After having a blood clot many women are then faced with life-changing side effects including: being on blood thinners, pain in the area of the clot, future pregnancy problems, and increased risk of developing another clot.
Yaz strokes are serious Yaz side effects reported by women using this fourth-generation contraceptive. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic stroke (caused by blockage) and hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding). Women who are otherwise healthy with no prior stroke problems have experienced life threatening events involving a stroke where no other health issues exist. One of the serious risks with Yaz birth control and other fourth-generation contraceptives is the increased chance of developing a blood clot which can lead to a stroke or heart attack. After having a stroke many women are then faced with life-changing side effects including: permanent loss of movement, difficulty communicating, and permanent loss of brain functions.
Yaz Lawsuit Background
Yaz and Yasmin are manufactured by Bayer. The drug Yasmin was initially manufactured by Berlex Laboratories, Inc. and/or Berlex, Inc. Berlex was acquired by Bayer in 2006, which then began manufacturing and marketing an extremely similar drug, Yaz, which is the bestselling birth control pill in the USA and especially in California.
The FDA has received over 50 reports of YAZ related deaths The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Bayer in October, 2008 that its television advertisements were untrue, and that Yasmin/Yaz has additional risks because of its chemical makeup, as compared to other oral contraceptives. Bayer agreed to spend $20 million on corrective ads, many of which are airing on television now.
Yasmin and Yaz have come under fire by some researchers and health advocates who say that the drugs put women at higher risk for blood clots, strokes and other health problems than some other birth control pills according to an article in the New York Times on September 26, 2009. Two studies on Danish and Dutch women, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in August 2009, found a higher risk of venous blood clots for women taking newer progestins, including drospirenone, a generic name for YAZ and Yasmin.
We believe the evidence will establish that Bayer did not tell the whole truth about the drug, concealed defects and YAZ side effects, failed to properly test it for YAZ side effects, did not fully disclose YAZ side effects, and consciously acted to maximize profits at the expense of safety of women.
