ZICAM and Loss of Smell

The FDA has warned consumers to discontinue to the use of Zicam Cold Remedy nasal products. Marketed by Matrixx Initiatives, an Arizona based company, these products are zinc-containing nasal cold remedies used to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Unfortunately, these products have been associated with a long lasting or permanent loss of smell, which is known as Anosmia. Loss of smell can cause serious problems. People with anosmia are not able to appreciate flavors, lose the pleasure of eating, and cannot smell smoke, a gas leak, or spoiled food. Workers who rely on their sense of smell will also be adversely affected.

Since Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel was introduced to the market, the FDA has received more than 130 reports of loss of smell associated with use of the product. Some users report losing their sense of smell after the first dose while others reports the loss of smell as occurring after multiple doses. The FDA also reports that the manufacturer of Zicam, Matrixx, allegedly received more than 800 reports of loss of smell after using these products, but failed to forward these reports to the FDA. If Matrixx wishes to continue marketing these products, they will have to have them approved as a drug by the FDA. The FDA also noted in its warning to Matrixx that they are unaware of any data establishing that these products are safe and effective for use as a cold remedy.

The Zicam products associated with loss of smell are:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size
