FDA Warns Fosamax Users of Side Effects

On October 13, 2010, the FDA warned patients and health care providers about the risk of an atypical thigh bone fracture, a rare but serious type of thigh fracture, in people who take Fosamax and similar drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis.  These risks are increased in people using Fosamax for five years or more.  These fractures, while rare, have been mostly reported in patients taking Fosamax or other drugs of this type.

The FDA announced in March that it was conducting an ongoing safety review of Fosamax and its association with femur fractures.  After reviewing data and the American Society for Bone Mineral Research Task Force report, the FDA issued its warning.  The FDA is requiring the Warnings and Precautions section of Fosamax and other biophosphonate osteoporosis medications to better inform patients of the risk of these atypical thigh bone fractures and advising prescribing doctors to evaluate every patient after five years of therapy to determine the ongoing need for the medication.

Fosamax Hip and Femur Fracture Information

An atypical femur or thigh fracture occurs with little or no trauma or a drastic event. Any unusual or new thigh or groin pain should be reported to your doctor and you should be evaluated for a femur fracture.

The FDA announced on October 13, 2010, that these fractures are called “atypical subtrochanteric” fractures often appear in the bone just below the hip joint. Normally, these are extremely rare fractures, but there has been shown to be a higher incidence among people taking bisphosphonates, including Fosamax, Fosamax Plus D, Actonel, Actonel with Calcium, Boniva, Atelvia, and Reclast.
