15 Million Surge Protectors Recalled due to Fire Hazard

Schneider Electric has recalled 15 million surge protectors that were manufactured prior to 2003 due to a fire hazard.  The name of the product is the APC SurgeArrest.  The American Power Conversion (APC), now known as Schneider Electric, manufactured these surge protectors.  These surge protectors during their normal use can overheat, smoke, and melt.  These risks increase the likelihood of a fire.  There have been 700 reports of overheated surge protectors, and 55 claims of property damage from fires of the APC SurgeArrest, including 13 reports of injuries.  The damages include $916,000 in fire damage to a home and $750,000 in fire damage to a medical facility.

The affected models were manufactured in China and the Philippines between 1993 and 2002.  The recalled surge protectors include:

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled surge protectors, unplug them and contact Schneider Electric for a free replacement surge protector.  Customers may contact Schneider Electric toll-free at (888) 437-4007 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at http://recall.apc.com.
