As of October 23, 2012 the death toll from the bacterial meningitis outbreak linked to the New England Compounding Company’s steroid treatment has risen to 23 in sixteen states and people with bacterial fungal meningitis has risen to 297. On October 22, 2012 the FDA issued a list of all clinics that received drugs, 1279 in number, shipped on or after May 21, 2012 by NECC.
Health officials have now indicated they may have clues for the 14,000 others that may predict who will get sick. According to a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Health, where 69 people have been diagnosed with infections and nine people have died, one of the three contaminated lots of methylprednisone acetate—Lot No. 06292012@26, sickened more patients than the other two lots.
