Signs your roads are not safe

On Behalf of | May 9, 2022 | Dangerous Road Condition

When you think of motor vehicle accidents, your mind likely wanders to drunk driving accidents or speeding. Many feel if they are responsible behind the wheel, accidents could never happen to them. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Even the safest drivers are at risk when routes are not properly marked and maintained.

You trust local municipalities to keep your streets safe, but when they do not, disaster can strike. Be on the lookout for signs that your highways may not be up to snuff.

Poorly marked sharp curves

When you think of California, you think of scenic highways and winding roads. But navigating too fast around a sharp bend can cause a vehicle to skid into the next lane or oncoming cars. There should be plenty of warning signs to alert motorists of upcoming curves. Speed limits should lower well before the bend to prepare drivers for the danger ahead.

Inadequate barriers

Low barriers like highway medians and guardrails pose a significant risk to automobiles. If rails or medians are too low or nonexistent, cars could drive off the road or flip over the barrier.

Poor water drainage

Storm drains are necessary to keep water off the streets during and after rainfall. Flooding can occur if those drains become clogged and fail to work correctly. According to the National Weather Service, it only takes six inches of water to lose control of a vehicle.

It is the responsibility of the local government to keep roadways safe. Be aware of your surroundings and take note of dangerous driving conditions.
