Recently, the consumer group World Against Toys Causing Harm (WATCH) published its annual list of the most dangerous toys of the year. One of the toys mentioned as being among the most dangerous is the Power Rangers Samurai Mega Blade, sold at Toys R Us, Kmart, and WalMart, which, when a flap is pulled by the child, releases a 2 foot “sword” with the potential for serious facial or other impact injuries. Another is the Zing Toys, Inc. Z-Curve Bow which claims to have the capability of launching foam arrows over 125 feet. Even toys for the youngest children are not exempt as shown by the Haba Pulling Animal Duck (which has a 33″ cord instead of the standard 12″ cord and poses a strangulation hazard) and the Schylling school bus (which has removable firm rubber tires and plastic wheels which can cause a choking hazard).

What can you do as a consumer to prevent injury to your child from toys? First and foremost, examine the toy carefully yourself to see if it has sharp edges, projectiles, or removable parts that may be choking hazards. Secondly, read the product information, instructions, and warnings thoroughly to be sure that the toy is appropriate for your child’s age and abilities and to make sure it is used correctly. If you have any questions, contact the manufacturer before use. Finally, the Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes a specific,up to date list of recalled toys at its website.
