How are speed limits set?

On Behalf of | Feb 12, 2025 | Car Accident

When a person gets their driver’s license, one of the skills they have to learn is how to follow the speed limit. This is critical because driving too fast can lead to crashes. Some people don’t realize that driving too slowly can also cause a safety issue.

All roads have speed limits that are either posted with signs or set by statutory laws. Following the maximum speed limit, as well as any set minimum speed limits on the road is critical.

Speed limits are set with safety in mind

All speed limits are set with safety in mind. Maximum speed limits are established based on what is safe for ideal conditions. Factors, such as the road layout, presence of pedestrians, traffic volume, roadway type, line of sight distance and history of crashes are considerations that affect the speed limits.

Since speed limits are set based on ideal conditions, drivers should realize that it may not be safe to drive at the speed limit in inclement weather. Slower speeds may also be necessary if the road is congested or there are other circumstances, such as workers being present.

When drivers opt to drive faster than the posted speed limit or the speed that’s safe considering the conditions, they can cause catastrophic crashes. These can lead to serious injuries that require urgent medical attention. Victims of wrecks that are caused by a negligent driver may opt to pursue a compensation claim. These claims are subject to time limits, so it may be best to work with someone familiar with these matters.
