Graco Recalls 3,773,379 Child Car Seats due to Buckle Defect

| Feb 13, 2014 | Automobile Defects, Product Liability

Graco Children’s Products will be recalling 3,773,379 toddler and booster child seats due to a buckle defect.  The defect involves difficulty in unlatching the harness buckle.  In some cases, the buckle becomes stuck in a latched condition so that it cannot be opened by depressing the buckle’s release button.  If the buckle becomes stuck, it may be difficult to remove the child from the restraint system.  In emergency situations, this increases the risk of injury in the event of a vehicle crash, fire, or other emergency, in which a prompt exit from the vehicle is required.

Eleven car seat models are affected by this recall.  They include models Cozy Cline, Comfort Sport, Classic Ride 50, My Ride 65, My Ride with Safety Surround, My Ride 70, Size 4 Me 70, Smartseat, Nautilus, Nautilus Elite, and Argos 70.  These car seats were manufactured between 2009 and 2013.  The buckles at issue were fabricated by AmSafe Commercial Products, Inc., in Elkhart, IN.

The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a remedy or notification schedule.  According to the Graco website, Graco will offer a new and improved replacement harness buckle to affected consumers at no cost.  Owners may contact Graco’s customer service team at 800-345-4109 (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.) or [email protected].

Last month, Combi USA recalled 33,139 child car seats because the harness webbing failed to meet minimum breaking strength requirements established in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213, “Child Restraint Systems.”
