Avandia Diabetes Drug Lawsuit

| Dec 28, 2010 | Avandia Diabetes Drug

Studies Show Avandia Increases Risk for Cardiac Problems

Type two diabetics with high blood sugar levels are prone to serious health problems, such as hypertension, obesity, stroke, heart attack and heart disease. Avandia (generic name rosiglitazone maleate) has been given to many type two diabetes patients to keep their blood sugar levels below dangerous levels.  However, recent studies have revealed an increase in cardiac problems for diabetic patients taking Avandia.

While any drug will have occasional negative side effects, the attorneys at the Brandi Law Firm hold manufacturers accountable for negligently placing dangerous or defective drugs on the market.  Our drug litigation attorneys are actively researching and analyzing claims involving Avandia injury, such as heart disease or heart attack.

“Unfortunately, rosiglitazone [Avandia] appears to increase, rather than decrease, the most serious complication of diabetes, heart disease.”
-Dr. Steven Nissen, Chairman of Cardiology, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio

The Most Serious Side Effects

Despite the disturbing side effects described above, the worst consequences for those who used this drug had yet to be identified. That side effect was/is a condition called “PPH,” which stands for Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. This condition has no cure, but can be somewhat managed if it’s diagnosed in its early stages.  Symptoms that have drawn the most concern from doctors and Avandia attorneys include:

  • Heart Risks
  • Strokes
  • Heart Attacks
  • Heart Disease
  • Heart Failure

These conditions can all be debilitating, and they can all lead to the death of a patient. These reports ultimately led to the FDA posting a report of the drug on its Web site in January of 2006.
