Recent Study Indicates Robotic Colon Surgery Shows No Benefit and is Not Cost Effective

| Dec 23, 2013 | Da Vinci Robot Surgery

According to a recent study from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine published in JAMA Surgery, patients who undergo robotic colon surgery have no benefit over laparoscopy and the medical costs for the robotic surgery are higher.  The data was from 244,129 colectomies, taken from similar complication rates, mortality rates and length of hospital stays between laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.  Based on the data, the robotic surgery cost an average of nearly $3,000 more ($14,847 vs. $11,966) than laparoscopic surgery.

Nita Ahuja, M.D., an associate professor of surgery and oncology at John Hopkins, stated about the study, “What we have found is that the robot is no better than laparoscopy and it costs more. It has no benefit.”

Previously, studies were published from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Journal for Healthcare Quality.  The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology study showed patients undergoing benign hysterectomies using robots (including da Vinci robot) were more likely to have pneumonia post surgery, had the same complication rate as no robotic surgery, and paid $2500 more for their procedures than non-robotic surgery.  In November 2013, according to the FDA, Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Robot system received 3,697 adverse reports in 2013, more than double of the number of adverse events received in 2012.
