Toyota Recalls 1.9 Million Prius Cars Globally due to Software Problem

| Feb 17, 2014 | Automobile Defects

Toyota will recall 1.9 million Prius vehicles globally due to a software defect that affects the car’s hybrid control system.  The vehicles were manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014.  The breakdown is as follows: 997,000 cars in Japan, approximately 713,000 vehicles in North America, another 130,000 in Europe and the rest in other regions are being recalled.

The software defect can shut down the hybrid system and could damage the transistors.  When this occurs, the hybrid system could shut down and the vehicle will lose power.

Toyota will notify owners and dealers will update the software for both the motor/generator control electronic control unit (ECU) and the hybrid control ECU, free of charge.  If an owner experiences a failure of the inverter before the vehicle receives updated software, the dealer will replace the inverter assembly with a new one at no charge.  The recall is expected to begin in late February 2014.  Owners may contact Toyota at 800-331-4331.

Toyota Issues Recall for 261,114 RAV4, Lexus Sport Vehicles, & Tacoma Vehicles

Additionally, Toyota issued a separate recall affecting 261,114 RAV4 crossovers, Lexus sport utility vehicles, and Tacoma pickup trucks in the United States.  The recall stems from a defect in the electronic circuits in the brake system that adjusts the fluid pressure of each wheel cylinder.  The defect can effect the stability control and anti-lock braking systems to switch off intermittently.  The vehicle models are from 2012 and 2013.

Toyota will notify owners, and Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software for the Skid Control electronic control unit, free of charge.  The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.  Owners may contact Toyota at 800-331-4331.

Additionally, affected car owners can get more information at Toyota’s recall website.
